Diffing/review per file(s) sounds good, I've added a ticket for that. The diff on update is something we've been bouncing around; we've talked about doing an update preview window, basically the 'review and check in' window to review an update that is about to happen. Do you care about previewing the update before it happens, or just review after the fact?
As for 'check in' vs commit, people are more likely to know what 'check in' means, where commit is more of a database term and not quite what a newbie expects. So 'check in' was chosen with the intention of making ZigVersion more usable. Same with history vs log. Afaik, these changes haven't created any confusion; you're the first person that has asked about why different terminology is being used.
