I see your point about new users being confused about "commit" vs "check in" but I'd suggest that using the "standard" SVN terminology be a preference the user could set (you can make the default the more accessible terminology).
Perforce uses at least 2, if not 3, different sets of terminology in its command line and various GUI clients and to say that's a bit confusing is an understatement.
Oh, and I'd like to cast another vote for the cool diff view being accessible on the context menu of any modified file (so available anytime Check In... is).
